I am definitely late to the party on this one, but with Thanksgiving being here it felt right to go through this book tag and select my picks for the different thanksgiving food themed prompts! The original book tag was created by @Fangirlscity (Click link for original video).
- Bread – What Book is purely fluff, and has no real plot line?
- Not a great start, but there isn’t a book I can think of that didn’t have at least some plot. If I had to choose a book that I think was skippable in a series I’d say A Court of Frost and Starlight (Sarah J Maas). I read it, and left if feeling like it didn’t add or give much beyond showing Feyre after the events. Not fluffy, but not exactly the biggest add to the series even for a novella.
- Turkey – What Book made you want to fall asleep?
- The Damned – (Renee Ahdieh) I don’t remember the Beautiful being very fast paced as far as paranormal stories go, but the beginning to the Damned was slow and all about setting up for the event, which for a sequel was really strange for me. It took a while to get to the point where things began to actually go down. It could have been my year of reading struggles, but this one was a tough beginning to get through for me.
- Gravy – What Book makes the whole series worth reading?
- Stalking Jack the Ripper – (Kerri Maniscalco) It took me a while to pick up this book since I’ll be honest the first page made me tiny bit squeamish, but this first book made the entire series happen for me. Between Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell the story is filled with rich characters and investigations that kept me completely invested and addicted. It started with the first book and ricocheted into me buying all the books.
- Stuffing – What Book is stuffed full of action scenes?
- Morning Star – (Pierce Brown) I’d like to say over the last years I would have found more books as packed with action as this book, but that’s probably a hard ask since this one was so jam-packed, and intense that it didn’t feel like I was even reading at one point. This book has been my favorite of the series, and one of the reasons I honestly consider this one of my favorite sci-fi series.
- Mashed Potatoes – What Book looked good and then wasn’t?
- Majesty – (Katharine McGee) This one still kills me inside each time, I just can’t get over the sadness and frustration that hit me upon finishing this sequel to American Royals. I finished American Royals when it first released and loved it to the point that I was still driven nuts by the cliffhanger upon opening Majesty the next year. What happened next was just disappointment after disappointment for me. It isn’t exactly about my favorite couples being torn apart, but characters (main ones) being forgotten, and character arcs that didn’t quite make sense. I am part of a minority in this opinion but it doesn’t erase the hurt and frustration that came out of an anticipated release for me.
- Cranberries – What Book has the sweetest romance?
- I read mostly fantasy, and darker YA series, so this one was an unusually difficult choice for me, but To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – (Lara Jean & Peter – Jenny Han). Like I said, I don’t read a lot of cutesy romance stories, so even in Romance there are some rougher couples, or scenarios than what occurred in this series. I’ll keep it to the first book since spoilers, but between the initial point of their relationship and the events during it I was just thinking ‘awww’ even when things weren’t the best for them. This was just an all around cute and sweet book/series to read. It’s definitely a feel good when I’ve been reading a lot more serious books in a year.
- Corn – What’s the corniest book you’ve ever read?
- I don’t have a book I necessarily find corny, but one that really could have been corny if it didn’t hit that perfect balance; Ready Player One – Ernest Cline. The book is focused on the main character, Wade as he works to win the prize in a game of puzzles left behind by the OASIS’s pop culture obsessed creator. Filled with references to so many video game, music, tv, and book references this book could have so easily have just been corny, but instead had me nerding out with it. That felt like a feat in itself, and I am actually excited to see what we get in the upcoming sequel, Ready Player Two.
- Green Beans – What Book is too long and needs to be shortened?
- I haven’t read any books in the last year that made me feel like they were too long, so this will be a joke; The Eye of the World – Robert Jordan. This is a joke since I’m just a bit hesitant to start reading this given its thicc size. It isn’t the only book on my shelves to be a bit on the larger side, but it is the latest, and one with a lot of rave reviews backing it. A close second place is the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, which still is on my shelves unread (I am working on getting myself to read this one, I promise).
- Pumpkin Pie – What Book do you read to get out of a reading slump?
- Not a book, but I typically lean towards contemporary, YA contemporary, and romance focused reads when I’m in a slump. That or a standalones tend to help me if I’m in a reading slump.
- Dog/Cat – What’s your favorite Thanksgiving food that you would steal from the table?
- Potato Salad. Not sure if a lot of readers have had this one, but it is a holiday staple in my family’s meals. It features on the Christmas, Thanksgiving, and my Birthday menu whenever possible, and can you guess who requests it? Me!! My Grandmother is the one with the recipe, and I could/would eat just this if my family allowed it. Yes, they have to keep an eye on me with this one, and I don’t apologize for that.
